BEX Engraving has been creating Challenge Coins since 1984, long before most challenge coin companies even existed.
Challenge Coins sure have come a very long way in the last 20+ years. Remembering back when "challenge coin" wasn't very well known... only a hand full of military even knew what they were.. boy!! look at that phrase now. Huge business is made from the challenge coin industry, companies all over the world producing challenge coins because of the huge following they now have. Especially when you consider that the bulk of these coins are purchased direct through US military channels.
Our estimates, roughly 95% of all challenge coins are now made in China or other foreign countries, which isn't really considered a bad thing. These countries produce coins entirely different than US companies (meaning US companies that produce coins within the US, hence the "Made in USA" tag line), these processes have been streamlined, and have hundred of devoted hands-on workers, which speeds up the process and lowers the costs.
Cost! We think cost is the largest deciding factor for most challenge coin purchasers, and yes - we agree with keeping challenge coins affordable, and as well, we do outsource many of our challenge coin orders to China... saying this and doing this, with companies that understand the coin fabrication industry, can make a huge difference with the finished quality of challenge coins.
We have seen many finished coins, some are simply amazing, the details the finished quality - quite nice. 9 out of 10 times, from a professional point of view (knowing the fabrication process) we can tell what challenge coin companies were the purchasing point, based on just the details of the finished coins.
What most sales reps don't know, us coin fabricators do know. Regardless whether challenge coins are made from a US based company or from a foreign company, the people you are hiring to make these coins should have, at least from our stand point, and understanding of detail, depth, paint flow, design aspects front to back, and size of coin to accomodate the details being requested... without having this hands on knowledge, well - your coins just may not be what you were hoping for... When a customer receives a finished coin, the coin - in essence, should look better then the challenge coin artwork representing that coin, not the other way around.

BEX Engraving has been machining and engraving embossing dies since our beginning, 1973.
The most frequent orders requests are for embossing dies for pie tins, yes the kind you find at the bottom of all those wonderful pies just about anyone has enjoyed for dessert.
Machining and engraving both a Male and Female die so an embossed image appears on the pie tin. Engraving the male and the female requires exacting specifications, the images must create a seamless and smooth fit.
